2014 Synod AGM

2014 Synod Annual General Meeting

The Synod met for its 148th annual meeting in the Balclutha Presbyterian Church on the evening of Friday the 11th and through the day of Saturday the 12th of April.

The meeting again took the form of an act of worship which included the business as part of that worship.

The Synod convened on Friday evening when the outgoing Moderator, Bruce Fraser, constituted the meeting and spoke of his observations of Synod life. (here)   Bruce then inducted the Rev. Chris Burgin as the new Moderator who took over the worship during which Chris outlined his theme.  He took as his text “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”  He illustrated his text with stories from his experience revisiting, after 33 years, an island in Korea where he had served with Volunteer Service Abroad.(Read full address here).

Synod then moved on to share a meal together that was catered for by members of the Balclutha congregation.

Saturday continued the worship and throughout the day as reports were received the Moderator led the Synod in prayer for the work of the groups and people involved.

Reports were received from the Funding committees.  Synod was grateful to God when it was revealed that the Otago Foundation Trust Board had had a successful year that saw an increase of 25% in funding which meant that for the first time in its history the Synod had over 2 million dollars to support God’s mission in Otago and Southland.  Each of the conveners presented their reports and Synod approved the allocations.  Reports were also received from the non-funding committees of Synod
