Ministry Resource Committee's 2011 Annual Report
It has been a privilege again to serve as convenor of the Ministry Resource Committee for another year. I value the terms of reference for this committee although in the next year we will need to look at these carefully. With the formation of the Southern Presbytery we will need to re-examine what we do so that we are functioning together with purpose. Our function as a pastoral committee supporting and encouraging our Synod employees continues to be of value.
In the past John Daniel and Heather Simpson have reported to this committee but with the disestablishment of the position of National Mission Enabler we will miss his valuable input and visionary sharing for the future of ministry, not only in the Synod area but around the country. To use Cheryl’s words: “John and his team have encouraged and enabled the initiative of Kids Friendly to grow from dreams and tiny seeds to ‘mission possible’.’’ John and his team have enabled and encouraged many areas, often unseen, and we sincerely thank him for all he has done. We trust that he will have the opportunity of putting down on paper much of his thinking around areas of “Wellness” in ministry, and other vital missional areas. We also wish Heather God’s blessing as she continues as an ‘intern for ministry’ in the Wanaka area.
Bruce Fraser, the Synod Mission Advisor, covering the Southern Presbytery area, continues to offer helpful training in many areas of ministry to our southern parishes. Bruce has also been asked to take eldership training to several areas in the North Island where his input is being greatly valued. As a committee we continue to

support and encourage his ministry. Bruce and Beverley and Christine and Ross Hanson will be travelling to Canada in May to speak at a conference and minister in the Cariboo area. Our challenge is to support and pray for them as they go. Bruce had major surgery just before Christmas so we are grateful for a successful recovery but also encourage Bruce to take the time he needs to fully regain his strength.
Stephanie Redhead, the Regional Youth Advisor, began this New Year with a new strategy of working. We value Stephanie’s knowledge and experience. Her encouragement and support to youth ministries in our area is vital.
Cheryl Harray’s ministry as Kids Friendly Advisor is also a gift to our area. Cheryl is an encourager and she is committed to helping encourage and resource the churches of the south as they minister to children and families. As a committee we value our pastoral role to the Synod employees and commend their ministry to you all for your support and prayer.
Knox Centre for Ministry and leadership also reports to our committee and we are very encouraged to hear that the centre has had an excellent year with affirmation from a wide variety of sources. The core function of the Centre is the formation of ordinands for Ministry of Word and Sacrament. We thank Kevin Ward for his reports and also offer our prayers and encouragement.
It is helpful to hear from the different areas from around the presbytery. It is good to share where ministry is at for all of us and offer constructive advice, help and essentially prayer. There is so much to celebrate as we see God at work amongst us as a people. Any committee that encourages sharing and the building of relationships between us all is of value.
The Ministry Resource Committee also has the task of initiating and supporting innovative and new mission within the Synod area. We were pleased to be able to support a Mataura initiative to print a little booklet, “Surviving the Storm.” This booklet was widely distributed to the communities around Southland following the early spring storms which caused havoc during lambing time. The funding for this is in the 2011 financial year so will be included in the table below next year. We also again supported the Putokotoko Camp for Cook Island people in the Synod area. The stories that have come out of that camping experience are very encouraging. We fund also the annual Men’s and Women’s camps, which have a valuable contribution to the health of those in ministry in the South. Faith Festival is in recess at the moment so funding has not been required.

As we look into the future it is important for us to continue discussion for future initiative in mission and ministry and I am privileged as convenor of this committee to be able to encourage forward thinking and vision into ways we can show Gods love in Christ in our communities.
The committee operates with a $20,000 budget donated to us from the Mission and Evangelism fund annually and can be spent at the discretion of the committee.
The following funds have been committed this year:
Women’s & Men’s Retreats 5,838
Rev Tour 4,000
Vision 20/25 995
Inspire Conference 2,000
Putokotoko 3,500

My grateful thanks to all who have participated on this committee this year. We appreciate the reports brought from the different presbyteries and endeavour to offer support where-ever we can. We also value the time taken by Synod Employees to report to the committee and we value who you are and all that you do in our area. Remember that this committee is here to help in a pastoral capacity. If you require resources or support for innovative new mission please contact us and we will endeavour to assist you.
